The High School Experience

For most high schoolers, life revolves around school, and I am not just talking about classes and homework. The various aspects of student life make an American High school a very engaging experience. More specifically, students engage in the following:

  • Clubs
  • Athletics
  • Student Government
  • Honor Societies
  • School Dances
    • Homecoming (every high school grade)
    • Ring Dance (only for juniors)
    • Prom (only for seniors)

A big part of the American high school experience that every international student should do at least once is attending American football games to support the school team. And if you don’t know how the game works, don’t worry. I don’t, either. It is all about supporting your team, feeling the energy of the cheerleaders and school band hyping up the crowd, and having fun with friends. So yes, the movies are true.

Work-life
Work-life

It is also very common for students in the US to work. Getting work experience and having some level of financial independence from their parents is important to high school students, especially juniors and seniors. Some work for the entire year, while others only during the summer.

Remember! In the US, tipping is essential. Many employees’ salaries, especially in restaurants, come mostly from tips, so if you’re satisfied with the service, don’t hesitate to tip generously.

Usually, 20% tip is considered appropriate.

According to the country you are from, you may be eligible to work in the US. If you are from Greece, you cannot get a job in the US. If you are from any other country, you will need to contact your country’s representative to determine your eligibility.

Hanging out with friends (+ suggestions)
Hanging out with friends (+ suggestions)

Even though engaging in activities and work takes up a lot of time, setting aside some time for hanging out with friends is also essential. This can vary according to the preferences of the group, but here are some suggestions:

Malls

Strip malls like Red Mill Commons or larger malls like Lynhaven are great places to meet, shop, and enjoy time with friends. However, if you are under 17, you must be accompanied by an adult to enter a larger mall. Security guards will most likely ask for your ID.

Parks

Water parks, Adventure Parks, and luna parks: There are many such places in the Hampton Roads area, and they are very fun. Some even offer military discounts for NATO families, but you must check with them first to verify.

Beach

This area has many great beaches outside and inside the military bases. The city is called Virginia Beach, after all. Most beaches have many lifeguards on duty to make sure people are safe. If you are in the water and hear them whistle, it means you need to get out.

Gyms and Recreation Centers

This is a personal favorite. Going to the gym with friends is very common here, and many great options exist. An important thing to keep in mind is that the Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Centers offer membership discounts to people under 18. They have gyms, pools, dance classes, basketball courts, and other activities for all members.

Movie Theaters

I believe watching a movie is a classic hangout idea in most countries. However, some movie theaters in the US have recliner seats, making the experience very comfortable and enjoyable. It is a bit more expensive, but it is worth it.

Gathering in Houses

Because all the previous destinations are sometimes far from housing areas, it is common for high school students to just gather in homes and often have sleepovers.
