A US high school has no specific path regarding what classes you take each year. Certain classes are required for graduation, and you must take a specific number of classes. You can also explore whichever study area you want at different difficulty levels.
English as a Second Language Class
When you start school in VA as a foreign student, you must take an English test to determine whether you need to be placed in an English as a Second Language class. Even if the test determines you need the class, you can usually opt-out and not take it. See more about improving your English here.
Schedule types
Blocks / Periods: A block is a dedicated period to class time at school. Every school day consists of four blocks that are 1.5 hours each.
Gifted Education
Virginia offers certain programs that are reserved for students identified as gifted. To take a gifted test and learn if you qualify, ask your counselor to help you contact your school’s gifted resource teacher.

Summer School
Some high school students decide to take one to two classes over the summer. This can help them repeat a class, finish some requirements earlier, and even graduate high school in three out of four years. However, summer classes are not free.

If you are interested in a summer course you need to ask your counselor to enroll you and they will be the ones determining which platform you will be taking the course on according to class availability.

VA Beach has many different High Schools you go to according to your school zone.

School Equipment and Software
As you may already know, VA Beach schools no longer use books. Instead, the school provides each student with a personal Chromebook that they will keep for their entire time in that school. The student also gets a personal account monitored by the school (the school administration has access to browser history).
